One of the unique events of the last decade is the awareness in modern organisations of the need to prepare their older staff for a happy life in retirement. This development has been borne out of an observation that many retirees live miserably and pass on shortly after retirement from active work life. Research also shows that this happens simply because potential retirees are rarely prepared for their retirement. At best what many organisations did was envelop the retiree’s gratuity and give them handshake along with corporate gifts.
Ironically, working life could be an extreme opposite of retirement. The idleness, wandering and confusion that befall retirees make them frustrated and miserable.
It should however be noted that retirees are ambassadors of the organisation they worked for and thus contribute, in no small measure, to the corporate image of the organisation even long after retiring. This is why adequate attention has been given to the peculiar problems of retirees and a special orientation programme is packaged to prepare potential retirees for a happy, healthful and prosperous life in retirement.
